RENEWABLE ENERGIES

For the ultimate in environmentally friendly hot water, consider a state-of-the-art system, harnessing energy direct from the sun to generate hot water and so reduce carbon emissions and global warming.

Solar Panels

A typical well sized solar system should provide around 50-70% of the domestic hot water requirements of a home, representing a very worthwhile saving on hot water heating costs. The remaining hot water requirement is provided by the boiler.

Solar panels harness the power in both direct and diffused sunlight and convert the energy to heat for the production of hot water for the home. The solar panels have been designed as a complement to existing heating systems which use a store of hot water in a cylinder. The existing cylinder is exchanged for a cylinder with two heat exchanger coils; one from the boiler in the property and a second from the solar panels.

Unvented Hot Water Systems

Unvented hot water systems are designed to ensure you get equally high pressure in every room of your home. You’re always in control with the tap. It’s good to know you can have your bath filled faster and command more power in your shower and because there’s no need for a noisy cistern in the loft, the whole system is whisper quiet.

SAFETY

At EPG Services your safety is paramount, if any of your appliances show any of the symptoms below you should call EPG Services immediately.

Boilers

  • Flames appear irregular or yellow
  • Smell of fumes or gas – (turn off gas at the gas meter) Contact Gas Emergency
  • Stains or smoke marks around the appliance
  • Overheating – temperature gauge goes above 80 degrees centigrade
  • Pressure drops rapidly – boiler needs refilling more than once a month
  • Fan whines loudly or screeches
  • Pilot goes out repeatedly
  • Poor hot water
  • Radiators don’t all heat up at the same time – possibly a boiler fault, or it is equally possible that the system is unbalanced.

Fires

  • Flames appear irregular or yellow – (flame effect fires require particular attention)
  • Smell of fumes or gas – (turn off gas at the gas meter) Contact Gas Emergency
  • Damaged coals or radiants
  • Stains or smoke marks around the fire
  • Failure to ignite on first light
  • Pilot goes out repeatedly or fails to light easily

Cookers

  • Flames appear irregular or yellow
  • Flames appear to lift off the burner or a roaring sound is heard
  • Smell of fumes or gas – (turn off gas at the gas meter) Contact Gas Emergency
  • Flame from burner is uncontrollable
  • Stains or smoke marks around the oven door
  • Failure to ignite on first light
  • Pilot goes out repeatedly or fails to light

Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas boilers, cookers and fires can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.

In a gas emergency act quickly and take the following safety steps:

  • Get fresh air immediately – open all doors and windows to ventilate the room

  • Switch off the appliance and do not use it again until it has been checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Turn off the gas supply at the mains
  • Call the National Gas Emergency number
  • If you are feeling ill visit your GP or the hospital immediately and tell them that your symptoms may be related to carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Contact EPG to check and fix the appliance

Boiler FAQ’s

What is a condensing boiler?

A condensing boiler makes more of the energy it runs on by using heat normally expelled through the flue. By converting over 90% of the fuel used (rather than just 50% in the case of some old boilers), a condensing boiler makes your fuel go further. Therefore, a condensing boiler can help to save you money and reduce your carbon footprint.

What is a combi boiler?

Combi is short for ‘combination’. It refers to the way this type of system serves as both a central heating boiler and a hot water heater. That means there’s no need for a water storage tank as hot water is provided on demand. As well as saving the space normally taken up by a water tank (in the loft or airing cupboard), a combi boiler saves on hot water costs as well as giving you hot water at mains pressure.


What is a regular boiler?

This typically forms part of a conventional heating system, and is linked to a series of water tanks that feed the boiler and radiators. Storing hot water is key to this system, so unlike a combi, a plentiful supply of hot water is always available. Space in the loft and airing cupboard is required for tanks.

What is a system boiler?

Like a regular system, this uses stored hot water. But because the water is pumped from the boiler straight to the radiators and hot water tank, it’s a faster, more economical system. What’s more, many of the components of the system are built in, making it easier, quicker and more affordable to install.
